Cerebral cortex: Function and development
"Structure et Function dans le Systeme Visuel" was the title given to the first Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale (INSERM) symposium held on this topic in Lyon in September 1986. Nine years later, its successor was held in the same place. What has changed? Well, the Salle Moliere has had a face-lift, and it would be difficult to think of a finer venue for a meeting of ab...
متن کاملThalamonal and Cerebral Circulation
Sir,—We read with much interest the fin-: study by Drs Sari, Okuda and Takeshita (Brit. J. Anaesth. (1972) 44, 330) as it relates closely to our own work. As they state, Fitch and his colleagues (1969) reported that fentanyl and droperidol in combination cause a small reduction in intracranial pressure, suggesting that this might be due to a fall in c.b.f. and CMRo,. This led us to study the af...
متن کاملDevelopment of the cerebral cortex: II. Lissencephaly.
Lissencephaly refers to diso rders of brain form ation in wh ich the surface of the cerebral cortex appears smooth. In affected individuals the layers of cells in the cerebral cortex are abnormal. Scientists believe that this is due to disruption of the early migration pattern of neurons. The two most common forms of lissencephaly are isolated lissencephaly and Mill er-Dicker syndrome (MDS). Pa...
متن کاملPapilloedema, CSF pressure, and CSF flow in cerebral tumours.
The presence or absence of papilloedema and the cisternal CSF pressure were compared with the RIHSA cisternograms in 24 patients with supratenotorial tumours. It was found that severe subarachnoid obstruction of CSF flow, leading to impaired CSF absorption at the superior sagittal sinus, was the main cause of raised CSF pressure and papilloedema associated with supratentorial tumours.
متن کاملEvolution and development of the mammalian cerebral cortex.
Comparative developmental studies of the mammalian brain can identify key changes that can generate the diverse structures and functions of the brain. We have studied how the neocortex of early mammals became organized into functionally distinct areas, and how the current level of cortical cellular and laminar specialization arose from the simpler premammalian cortex. We demonstrate the neocort...
